Mini Penguin

Needles: 4 mm (US: 6) crochet hook, darning needle
Yarn: DK in 3 colours
Materials: toy stuffing, scrap yarn or 2 buttons
Yardage: negligible

Crochet Mini Penguin
Directions: Remember to add turning chains and join all rounds with a slip stitch. All directions in UK English; see abbreviations glossary for US English equivalents.

Body, with blue yarn:
Rnd 1: magic loop of 5 dc sts [5 dc]
Rnd 2: *2dc* to end [10 dc]
Rnd 3: *2dc, dc* to end [15 dc]
Rnd 4: *2dc, dc4* to end [18 dc]
Rnds 5-6: dc all sts
Change to white yarn:
Rnds 7-8: dc all sts
Rnd 9: *dc2tog, dc4* to end [15 dc]
Rnd 10: *dc2tog, dc* to end [10 dc]
Rnd 11: *dc2tog* to end [5 dc]

Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Stuff the body and use the yarn tail to sew the gap closed.

Wings, with blue yarn:
Row 1: ch2, 2dc into 2nd ch from hook [2 dc]
Row 2: dc2 [2 dc]
Row 3: 2dc, 2dc [4 dc]
Row 4: dc4 [4 dc]
Row 5: dc, dc2tog, dc [3 dc]

Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Make a second wing.

Beak, with yellow yarn:
Row 1: ch2, 2dc into 2nd ch from hook [2 dc]
Row 2: dc2 [2 dc]
Fasten off, leaving a long tail.

Feet, with yellow yarn:
Make a magic loop with 5 dc sts, close with slst and fasten off.
Make a second foot.

Sew the wings to either side of the body, about just above where the blue upper half merges into the white lower half, along the top of each wing. Position the beak in the centre of the body, between the 2 wings, and sew into place. Use buttons, or knot some scrap yarn, for eyes and sew into place. Sew the feet onto the base of the body.
