Knitted Play Food Sandwiches

Yarn: DK (US: worsted) in various colours
Materials: none
Yardage: negligible

Directions: The sandwich is designed to have a “crust” at the back. If you would rather have 2 separate triangular slices of bread, simply stop the bread pattern at row 10 and make 2 bread pieces. All directions in UK English; see abbreviations glossary for US English equivalents.

Sandwich Bread

Cast on 2 sts.
Row 1: kfb twice [4 sts]
Row 2 (and all even rows to row 10): purl all sts
Row 3 (and all odd rows to row 9): kfb, k to last st, kfb
Rows 11-12: purl all sts [12 sts]
Rows 13-15: knit all sts
Row 16 (and all even rows to row 22): p2tog, p to last st, p2tog
Row 17 (and all odd rows to row 23): knit all sts
Row 24: p2tog twice [4 sts]
Bind off, and weave in ends.

Sandwich Filling

Repeat knitted bread pattern to row 10.
Row 11: kfb, k to last st, kfb [14 sts]
Row 12: purl all sts
Bind off, and weave in ends.

Sandwich Pickle

Cast on 8 sts.
Row 1: knit all sts [8 sts]
Row 2: k 1st st and slip back on to LH needle, pass 6 sts over the slipped st, return slipped st to RH needle, k remaining st [2 sts]
Use a darning needle to cinch the sts closed, and tie your yarn tails together before trimming.

To make up your knitted sandwich, layer the pieces together – filling inside bread, with pickles peeking out along the edges. Use bread coloured yarn to sew the diagonal edges of the sandwich, firmly together. NB: A length of yarn about as long as your arm, should be enough to go around both edges, twice, in simple running stitch.
